What exactly is The Wizard of Oz at Sphere?

This isn’t a remake of The Wizard of Oz, and it isn’t a conventional cinema screening either. Sphere Studios has taken the original 1939 film and adapted it specifically for the enormous interior of Sphere.

Sphere’s interior display covers roughly 160,000 square feet and wraps upward and over the audience. The original film was created for a traditional 4:3 cinema frame, so considerable work was required to expand scenes beyond their original boundaries and make the Land of Oz fill the venue.

The result is designed to make you feel less like you’re watching Dorothy’s journey and more like you’re travelling alongside her. Kansas, the tornado, Munchkinland, the Yellow Brick Road and the Emerald City can suddenly occupy almost your entire field of vision.

Why The Wizard of Oz works so well inside Sphere

Few films lend themselves to Sphere quite as naturally as The Wizard of Oz. The original movie already revolves around entering another world: muted Kansas suddenly gives way to Technicolor, Dorothy steps into Munchkinland, and the journey becomes increasingly fantastical as she approaches the Emerald City.

Sphere pushes that transformation much further. Its massive 16K display wraps around the audience while the venue’s directional audio system can place individual sounds within different parts of the room.

The soundtrack has also been re-recorded using an 80-piece orchestra while retaining the original cast performances. Inside Sphere, the music becomes spatial rather than simply coming from speakers in front of you — an especially effective treatment for songs such as Over the Rainbow.

The screen gets most of the attention, but the physical effects are what separate this experience from watching a huge movie.

One of the most fascinating parts of the project is what had to happen behind the scenes. The original movie was never intended to cover a screen that surrounds an audience, so Sphere Studios worked with technology and visual-effects specialists to expand the film for the venue.

Techniques including super-resolution, outpainting and performance generation were used alongside traditional visual effects. In simple terms, the production team increased the detail of the original footage and created visual information beyond the edges of frames that audiences had been watching since 1939.

For film fans, that alone makes this an intriguing experiment: one of Hollywood’s most recognisable movies being adapted for a display format that could not even have been imagined when Judy Garland first walked onto the Yellow Brick Road.

Unlike a concert residency with only a handful of performances each week, The Wizard of Oz experience runs across numerous dates and time slots. That makes it relatively easy to build into a Las Vegas itinerary — although popular weekend and evening sessions can still fill faster.

The experience itself runs for approximately 75 minutes. When comparing times, allow another 45 minutes before the listed start because doors open early and Sphere does not permit late seating once the presentation has begun.

Where should you sit for The Wizard of Oz at Sphere?

Choosing seats for The Wizard of Oz is slightly different from choosing seats for a Sphere concert. There isn’t a performer on stage that you need to be close to — the enormous display and the immersive environment are the stars of the show.

For maximum immersion, a central position with some elevation is generally the most natural choice. It gives you a balanced view of the screen while still allowing the image to fill your peripheral vision.

How to get to Sphere Las Vegas

Sphere sits at 255 Sands Avenue, immediately east of the Las Vegas Strip and beside the Venetian and Palazzo complex.

If you’re already around the Venetian, Palazzo or Wynn area, walking is usually the easiest choice. There is a pedestrian connection from the Venetian complex toward Sphere, making this one of the most convenient areas to stay if the experience is the centrepiece of your trip.

From further south on the Strip, rideshare is normally simpler than driving yourself. The Harrah’s/The LINQ Monorail station is also a useful option before continuing on foot toward the venue.

Turn The Wizard of Oz into a Las Vegas city break

At around 75 minutes, The Wizard of Oz is much easier to build into a day than a traditional concert. You could comfortably combine an afternoon performance with dinner and another Las Vegas show later that evening, or use it as an evening attraction after a day exploring outside the city.

For a first visit, the Strip itself can fill a day: the Bellagio fountains, Venetian canals, Caesars Palace, Fremont Street and the city’s ever-growing collection of immersive attractions.
