7 Beautiful Places You Must See in Larnaca

Larnaca’s most photographed building, the Church of Saint Lazarus (Agios Lazaros) is a late-9th-century Byzantine church built directly over the tomb of Lazarus — who, by tradition, sailed to Cyprus after being raised from the dead and became Larnaca’s first bishop. The honey-coloured stone and bell tower are striking by day, but come at dusk when it’s floodlit for the best photo. The old town’s narrow lanes and former Turkish quarter spread out from the church steps.

Good to know: Cover shoulders and knees to enter. Free.

The palm-lined seafront that gives Larnaca its holiday-postcard look. A wide sandy beach with calm, shallow water runs the length of the promenade, backed by cafés, tavernas and the low white arches of Larnaca Castle at the southern end. Best at golden hour, when the palms silhouette against the sea.

Good to know: Free, and a 5-minute walk from Saint Lazarus.

South of Finikoudes and right by the airport runway, Mackenzie Beach is Larnaca’s livelier stretch of sand — sun loungers, beach bars and a younger crowd, with planes occasionally passing low overhead on approach. It’s the spot for an afternoon swim followed by sundowners.

Good to know: A short taxi or a scenic 25-minute coastal walk from Finikoudes.

A few minutes outside town, this four-lake wetland complex is one of Cyprus’s great natural sights — and from roughly November to March it fills with hundreds of pale-pink flamingos. In summer the water evaporates entirely, leaving a stark white salt crust that’s just as striking to photograph, if flamingo-free. A flat lakeside trail makes it an easy walk or cycle.

Good to know: Flamingos are a winter-only sight (Nov–Mar) — come in summer for the salt-flat look instead.

Right on the Salt Lake’s western shore, this Ottoman-era mosque and shrine is built around the tomb of Umm Haram, a relative of the Prophet Muhammad, making it one of the most important sites in Islam. Framed by cypress and palm trees with the lake as a mirror, it’s one of the most tranquil — and photogenic — spots in Larnaca.

Good to know: Open to all visitors; modest dress required. Pair it with the Salt Lake walk above — they’re a two-minute stroll apart.

On the old road out toward Limassol stands this elegant 18th-century aqueduct, built between 1747 and 1750 by Ottoman governor Bekir Pasha to solve Larnaca’s freshwater problem. Its Roman-style arches remained in use until the 1930s and are beautifully floodlit after dark, with a footpath linking it to the Salt Lake trail.

Good to know: Free, open-air, and easiest to combine with a Salt Lake visit since the two connect by footpath — the bike tour above actually loops through Finikoudes, the Salt Lake and the aqueduct in one ride.

The odd one out geographically, but worth the detour: Lefkara is a mountain village about 40km (roughly 40 minutes’ drive) into the foothills of the Troodos, world-famous for its intricate handmade lace (lefkaritika) and filigree silver — a UNESCO-listed craft still made by village women sitting outside their doorways. Cobbled streets, small chapels and mountain views make it feel a world away from the coast.

Good to know: This is a half-day trip, not a quick stop — budget 3–4 hours including the drive. Best by hire car; buses require a change.
