The Story & Why It Works
Hamilton follows Alexander Hamilton from his arrival in New York as an ambitious young immigrant through the American Revolution, the creation of a new government and the political and personal conflicts that shaped his legacy. George Washington, Aaron Burr, Thomas Jefferson and the Schuyler sisters all become part of a fast-moving story about ambition, loyalty, love and the cost of being remembered.
The musical does not feel like a conventional history lesson. Lin-Manuel Miranda’s score combines hip-hop, R&B, jazz and traditional musical theatre, using rapid lyrics and recurring musical ideas to make dense political events surprisingly easy to follow. The turntable staging keeps the story moving, while quieter songs give Eliza Hamilton and Aaron Burr emotional weight beyond the history-book version of events.

The Richard Rodgers Theatre
Hamilton plays at the Richard Rodgers Theatre at 226 West 46th Street, in the heart of Manhattan’s Theatre District. The building opened in 1924 as the 46th Street Theatre and was renamed in 1990 for composer Richard Rodgers. It has 1,319 seats and has been the Broadway home of Hamilton since 2015.
Getting there: Times Sq–42 St is the most convenient major subway hub and is served by the 1, 2, 3, 7, N, Q, R, W and S trains. The 42 St–Port Authority station on the A, C and E lines is also nearby. Allow extra time for the short walk, theatre security and finding your seat.
Arrival: Aim to reach the theatre around 30 minutes before curtain. Latecomers may be held outside the auditorium until an appropriate break in the performance, and the timing of late seating depends on your section.
