The Story & The Spectacle
The plot sticks close to the 1994 animated film: a young lion prince, Simba, flees the Pride Lands after his father Mufasa is killed in a stampede engineered by his uncle Scar, then returns years later — pushed on by Rafiki, Timon and Pumbaa — to reclaim his place as king.
What actually sets the stage production apart is director Julie Taymor’s staging rather than the story itself. Full-body animal puppetry, African-inspired textiles, masks worn above the actors’ own faces rather than hiding them, and a stampede sequence that still draws an audible reaction from first-time audiences almost 30 years on. It plays as much like a piece of visual theatre and dance as it does a book musical, which is a large part of why it’s remained one of the toughest tickets on Broadway since it opened.
