Christmas Market Dates in Europe (2026 Guide)

A classic European Christmas market at dusk with lit stalls and a decorated tree

Christmas market dates in Europe shift every year, and a handful of early openers — Vienna, Innsbruck, Copenhagen — are already lighting their stalls before most people have finished their Halloween candy. This guide covers every major market across 16 countries, grouped by region with confirmed 2026 dates where available, plus a short bonus list of the best European-style markets worth the trip if you’re staying closer to home in North America.

At a Glance

A few patterns worth knowing before you book: German and Swiss markets tend to run the shortest season, mostly closing by Christmas Eve, while Belgian, Czech, and Baltic markets stretch into early January. Vienna, Innsbruck, Dresden, and Copenhagen are the earliest openers, and if you want the longest possible season in one city, Bruges, Brussels, Bratislava, and Prague all run into the new year.

Earliest openingDresden Striezelmarkt — 25 November (Innsbruck and Copenhagen open even earlier, 13–15 November)

Austria

Austria essentially invented the modern Christkindlmarkt, and its three headline cities still set the standard — Vienna for scale and imperial backdrop, Salzburg for the Mozart-era old town, and Innsbruck for the Alpine setting with mountains rising straight out of the market square.

Germany

No country does this better by sheer volume — Germany runs hundreds of Weihnachtsmärkte every winter. These nine are the ones worth building a trip around, from Nuremberg’s centuries-old Christkindlesmarkt to Rothenburg’s medieval walled town, which looks like a Christmas card even without the market.

Switzerland

Swiss markets run smaller and shorter than their German neighbours, but the settings do a lot of the work — Bern’s arcaded old town, Lucerne’s covered Chapel Bridge, and Montreux’s lakefront with the Alps rising across Lake Geneva.

France

Alsace is the draw here — Strasbourg has billed itself the “Capital of Christmas” since the 1570s, and nearby Colmar’s half-timbered canal district is about as close as a real place gets to a storybook illustration.

Belgium

Belgium’s three markets all push into the new year, making the country a good option for anyone travelling right around Christmas itself rather than the weeks before it.

United Kingdom

London’s Hyde Park market isn’t a traditional Christmas market in the German sense — it’s closer to a winter funfair with a market built in — but it draws bigger crowds than any single market on the continent.

Prague’s Old Town Square market needs little introduction — the wooden stalls framed by the Gothic towers of Týn Church are one of the most photographed Christmas scenes in Europe. See our full Prague Christmas market guide for the quieter alternatives.

Hungary

Budapest’s Vörösmarty Square market has been ranked among Europe’s best for its focus on Hungarian design and craft over imported souvenirs, with the Basilica market nearby adding a light-show backdrop.

Slovakia

Bratislava’s Old Town market is small enough to see in an afternoon but often overlooked in favour of Vienna, which is barely an hour away by train — making the two a natural pairing.

Estonia & Denmark

Two very different Nordic takes: Tallinn’s medieval Town Hall Square market is consistently ranked among Europe’s best for atmosphere, while Copenhagen’s version lives inside Tivoli Gardens — technically a theme park, but one that goes all-in on Christmas from mid-November.

Copenhagen (Tivoli Gardens)13 Nov – 3 JanA full theme park dressed for Christmas, not just market stalls

Italy

Rome isn’t a Christmas market destination the way Germany or Austria is, but Piazza Navona hosts the city’s main holiday market each winter, with stalls, a carousel, and nativity-scene vendors set against Bernini’s fountains.

If one market set the template every other city on this list is still copying, it’s Vienna’s. Markets have been held in front of the Rathaus since the 1960s, but Vienna’s Christmas market tradition itself goes back to a charter granted by Duke Albrecht I in 1298 — making it one of the oldest documented Christmas markets anywhere in Europe. The modern Rathausplatz market spreads across the square in front of the neo-Gothic City Hall, with the building’s facade lit for the season and a towering tree at the centre of roughly 150 wooden stalls.

What separates it from the pack is scale without losing the craft focus — alongside the usual glühwein and roasted chestnuts, Rathausplatz devotes real space to Austrian artisans selling glass ornaments, woodwork, and handmade toys rather than mass-produced souvenirs. A dedicated children’s area runs workshops through the season, and the walk from the market down the Ringstrasse, past the Burgtheater and Parliament building lit for Christmas, is worth doing after dark even if you’ve already seen the stalls.

Good to know: Rathausplatz is free to enter and runs 13 November to 26 December 2026. It gets genuinely crowded on weekend evenings in December — a weekday afternoon visit, or an early evening before the dinner rush, is the easier way to see it without fighting crowds the whole time.

Rathausplatz is only one of Vienna’s markets — see our complete Vienna Christmas Market guide for Spittelberg, Schönbrunn, Belvedere and Freyung, plus tours and concerts worth booking.

Beyond Europe

A handful of North American markets have leaned hard into the German-style template — imported wooden huts, glühwein, and artisan stalls rather than a generic holiday craft fair — and a few are good enough to be worth a trip in their own right.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which Christmas market in Europe opens earliest?

Innsbruck and Copenhagen’s Tivoli Gardens both open in mid-November, while Vienna and Dresden open in the last week of November — all well before most other major markets.

Which Christmas markets run the longest into January?

Innsbruck and Tallinn both run to 6 January, and Prague isn’t far behind. Bruges, Brussels, Bratislava, Antwerp, and Copenhagen all run to around 3 January.

What’s the single best Christmas market in Europe?

There’s no single answer, but Vienna’s Rathausplatz market is the one most consistently named for combining scale, history, and setting — its tradition dates back to a 1298 charter, making it one of the oldest in Europe.

Are any of these dates still estimates?

Yes — Strasbourg, Budapest, Krakow, and Rome hadn’t published official 2026 dates at the time of writing. Their entries are marked as estimates based on recent years and will be updated once confirmed, typically in September or October.

Is it worth visiting a Christmas market outside Europe?

If European travel isn’t on the table, Toronto’s Distillery Winter Village and Chicago’s Christkindlmarket are the two that come closest to the real thing, both built directly on the German market model rather than a generic holiday craft fair.
