Roma vs Genoa: De Rossi Returns to the Olimpico
For many Roma supporters, this fixture is going to be about one man before a ball has even been kicked: Daniele De Rossi.
Born in Rome and developed through Roma’s academy, De Rossi spent 18 seasons in the Giallorossi first team. He made 615 competitive appearances for the club, placing him second only to Francesco Totti in Roma’s all-time appearance list, and eventually inherited the captain’s armband from Totti. Few players are as closely connected with the modern identity of AS Roma.
That relationship later moved from the pitch to the dugout. De Rossi returned as Roma head coach in January 2024, taking charge of the club he had represented for almost his entire career. His spell ended in September of the same year, but his connection with the Curva Sud and the wider Roma support never disappeared.
De Rossi vs Roma — The Story Continues
De Rossi was appointed Genoa head coach in November 2025, setting up something that once seemed almost unthinkable: a Roma legend walking into the Stadio Olimpico in charge of the opposition.
This will not actually be his first appearance back at the Olimpico with Genoa. The first came on 29 December 2025, when Roma defeated De Rossi’s side 3–1. Genoa got their revenge later in the season, beating Roma 2–1 at the Stadio Luigi Ferraris on 8 March 2026.
That makes the 2026/27 meeting another chapter rather than a first reunion. De Rossi knows Roma, the Olimpico and the pressures surrounding the club better than almost anyone, while Gian Piero Gasperini faces an opponent who will know exactly how much this fixture means to the home crowd.
Roma and Genoa After 2025/26
Roma enter the new campaign after an excellent third-place finish in Serie A in 2025/26, ending the season with 73 points and returning to the Champions League. Gasperini’s side therefore begin 2026/27 with expectations considerably higher than simply challenging for European qualification.
Genoa’s objectives were very different. The Rossoblù finished 16th with 41 points, successfully preserving their Serie A status. De Rossi’s arrival midway through the campaign helped give Genoa greater stability and also produced that memorable 2–1 victory over Roma in March.
On paper Roma will start as favourites at home, but last season proved Genoa are capable of making this uncomfortable. A disciplined De Rossi side returning to his old stadium is exactly the kind of fixture Roma cannot afford to underestimate.
Getting to the Stadio Olimpico
The Stadio Olimpico sits around 6 km north-west of central Rome in the Foro Italico and doesn’t have its own metro station, so most journeys involve a combination of metro, tram, bus and walking.
One of the easiest options is Tram 2 from Piazzale Flaminio, beside Flaminio Metro station and close to Piazza del Popolo, towards Piazza Mancini. From there, walk across the Ponte Duca d’Aosta towards the stadium.
If you’re coming from Termini, take Metro Line A towards Battistini to Flaminio and continue towards the stadium. Another option is Metro A to Ottaviano followed by bus services towards the Foro Italico area.
