The Basel Christmas Market is spread across the Old Town’s squares, with the main stalls on Münsterplatz beside the cathedral and Barfüsserplatz around the Barfüsserkirche. In 2026 it opens on 26 November, and this year there is also a new Christmas village on Theaterplatz and a trail of lights across the city. This guide covers the markets, the 2026 dates and hours, what to eat, practical tips and where to stay.
Basel’s markets sit a few minutes’ walk apart, so you can see both main squares in an afternoon and an evening. The city is also right on the border with France and Germany, which makes it an easy base for the Alsace markets. This guide is part of our Christmas Market Dates in Europe series, alongside our guides to Vienna, Munich, Colmar and Strasbourg.

Münsterplatz and Barfüsserplatz
Weihnachtsmarkt Münsterplatz
Münsterplatz sits next to Basel’s cathedral (the Münster) and has the city’s large Christmas tree, decorated with ornaments by the decorator Johann Wanner. The tourism board lists flame-grilled salmon cooked over an open beechwood fire here, and a Fairytale Forest with activities for children. Behind the cathedral, the Pfalz terrace gives a view over the Rhine, and it is especially good after dark when the lights are on.
The market is open daily from 11:00 to 20:30. On 23 December, Münsterplatz closes early at 18:00.
Weihnachtsmarkt Barfüsserplatz
Barfüsserplatz is centred on the Barfüsserkirche. Its landmark is a Christmas pyramid about 13 metres tall, where you can buy hot drinks, and there is a Feuerzangenbowle stall where the rum-soaked sugar loaf is lit over a copper pot. The Old Town’s rustic wooden chalets sell crafts, ornaments and food across the two squares, about 150 stalls in all.
It is open daily from 11:00 to 20:30, and closes at 20:00 on 23 December.

More Basel markets
Basler Wienachtsdorf, Theaterplatz
The tourism board describes the Wienachtsdorf as a new Christmas village on Theaterplatz, with about 40 huts. It opens at 11:00 and closes at 22:00 Monday to Thursday, 23:00 on Friday and Saturday and 21:00 on Sunday, so it is the place to go later in the evening once the main squares close, and it keeps going until 3 January.
Claraplatz
Across the Rhine in Kleinbasel, Claraplatz has a large alpine hut and is a food-and-drink stop rather than a craft market. Check the tourism board’s site for this year’s hours before you go.
Adväntsgass im Glaibasel
A neighbourhood market on Rheingasse, on the quieter side of the river. Visitor guides list it as opening in the late afternoon on weekdays and earlier at weekends, so treat the hours as a guide and confirm locally.
Lights and courtyards
Basel’s lights are as much a reason to visit as the stalls. The Christmas lights are switched on on 26 November and run daily from 15:00 to 22:30 until 3 January 2027. The tourism board points to Freie Strasse, Spalenvorstadt, St. Alban-Tal, Clarastrasse and Münsterplatz, and the roof of the Käppelijoch on the Mittlere Brücke is decorated like a giant Santa hat.
From 26 November, selected courtyards in the city centre open as Magical Courtyards (Zauberhafte Höfe), decorated for Advent. Locations are listed on the tourism board’s website. At Johann Wanner’s Christmas house on Spalenberg, about 500 square metres of decorations are on display, and it is open all year.
The tourism board also lists the lit stairwell of the cathedral’s St. Martin’s tower, open Monday to Friday from 16:00 to 18:00 during Advent for CHF 6, with last entry at 17:30 and only for groups of two or more.

What to eat and drink
- Basler Läckerli: a Basel speciality, a chewy gingerbread-style cake made with honey, candied fruit and almonds.
- Mulled wine: the staple, sold at stalls across both squares and at the pyramid.
- Feuerzangenbowle: mulled wine with a rum-soaked sugar loaf set alight above it, from the stall on Barfüsserplatz.
- Flame-grilled salmon: cooked on an open beechwood fire at a cabin on Münsterplatz.
- Raclette and grilled sausages: hot melted Swiss cheese and sausages for something more filling.
- Waffles and Christmas sweets: for a sweet stop between stalls.
Prices for 2026 have not been published, and Swiss prices are generally higher than in nearby France or Germany, so check the boards before you order.
Day trips to Alsace
Basel is only a short ride from the Alsace markets. Trains reach Colmar in about 50 minutes and Strasbourg in a little over an hour and a quarter, so you can pair a Basel evening with a day in Alsace. Our guides cover Colmar and Strasbourg in full, and there are guided day trips from Basel if you would rather not plan the trains.

3-day Christmas market itinerary from Basel
Basel works well as a single base for a Christmas market break. Flights and trains into Basel are convenient, hotels here are often cheaper than in Colmar or Strasbourg in market season, and you unpack once. Spend one day in Basel, then take a train to Strasbourg and Colmar on the next two days and come back to the same hotel each evening.

Day 1: Basel
Start at the Münsterplatz market beside the cathedral, then walk down to Barfüsserplatz for the second main market. Take in the Old Town and the Rhine, and finish at the Basler Wienachtsdorf on Theaterplatz or under the festive lights after 15:00. Both main markets are listed as open 26 Nov to 23 Dec 2026, so check the dates above if you are travelling outside that window.
Day 2: Strasbourg
Take a morning train to Strasbourg and spend the day among its half-timbered streets, the cathedral and the many market squares. Plan an early evening train back so you are not rushing. Our full Strasbourg Christmas market guide has the squares, dates and food.
Day 3: Colmar
Colmar is the shorter ride, which makes it a good last day. Walk the canals and the colourful old houses, try the Alsatian food, and take an easy train back to Basel. See our Colmar Christmas market guide for the markets and opening dates. If you would rather not organise trains, the guided day tour above runs from Basel to Colmar.
Plan your visit
- Best time: weekdays are calmer, and weekends are very busy. The main market closes at 20:30, so use the Wienachtsdorf and the lit streets for later in the evening.
- Dates and hours: the main market runs 26 November to 23 December. On 23 December, Münsterplatz closes at 18:00 and Barfüsserplatz at 20:00.
- Getting around: Münsterplatz and Barfüsserplatz are a few minutes’ walk apart, and the Mittlere Brücke connects the Old Town to Kleinbasel.
- Money: Switzerland uses the Swiss franc (CHF), not the euro. Carry a card and some cash, and check what each stall accepts.
- Wish Book: during Advent, the inner courtyard of the Rathaus has a Wish Book that anyone can write in.
- Dress warmly: the squares are open-air, and December evenings in Basel are cold.
Where to stay
For the Christmas markets, base yourself in the Old Town or near Barfüsserplatz so you can walk between the squares and the lit streets. Hotels fill quickly for December weekends, so book early.

A boutique hotel on the Marktplatz in the car-free heart of the Old Town, about five minutes’ walk from the Münster. It is our pick for a base near the markets, not a hotel we have stayed in ourselves.
