The Story & The Score
MJ isn’t a cradle-to-grave biography — it zooms in on one moment. The show is set in June 1992, in a Los Angeles rehearsal studio, as Michael Jackson and his team prepare for the opening night of the Dangerous World Tour in Munich. A Rolling Stone journalist and camera crew have been granted access to document the rehearsals, and as Jackson walks them through the show he’s building, the musical slips back through his own memories — his childhood in Gary, Indiana, and the relentless rise of The Jackson 5; the creative partnership with producer Quincy Jones that produced Off the Wall, Thriller and Bad; and the pressure of being, by his own telling, never quite good enough.
The book is by two-time Pulitzer Prize winner Lynn Nottage, and the show is directed and choreographed by Christopher Wheeldon, built around more than 25 of Jackson’s songs performed live by a full cast and band rather than played over a soundtrack. MJ won 4 Tony Awards in 2022, including Best Actor in a Musical for Myles Frost’s performance as Michael, Best Choreography, Best Sound Design and Best Lighting Design.

The Neil Simon Theatre
MJ Broadway tickets all lead to the same address: the Neil Simon Theatre at 250 West 52nd Street, a few blocks north of the Times Square theatre district. It opened on November 22, 1927, as the Alvin Theatre — named for producers Alex A. Aarons and Vinton Freedley — and was renamed in 1983 to honor playwright Neil Simon. Designed by Herbert J. Krapp and operated by the Nederlander Organization, it’s a designated New York City landmark with around 1,467 seats across the Orchestra, Mezzanine and angled Box sections, and has been MJ’s home since the show opened there in 2022.
Getting there: Take the 1, C, or E train to 50th Street. The stop is a short walk from the theatre entrance.
