The Story & Why It’s Different
Long before Dorothy’s house ever lands in Oz, two young women meet as roommates at Shiz University: Elphaba, born with emerald-green skin, fiercely intelligent, and used to being misunderstood, and Galinda (later Glinda), popular, ambitious, and used to getting her way. What starts as rivalry grows into an unlikely friendship — until the politics of Oz push one of them to be crowned “good” and the other condemned as “wicked.”
Wicked is adapted from Gregory Maguire’s novel Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West, itself a reimagining of L. Frank Baum’s The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. With a score by Stephen Schwartz — including the now-iconic “Defying Gravity” and “Popular” — the show has been called “the defining musical of the decade” by The New York Times, and its themes of friendship, prejudice, and who gets to decide what’s “good” have only grown more resonant since it opened in 2003.

The Gershwin Theatre
Wicked Broadway tickets all lead to the same address: the Gershwin Theatre at 222 West 51st Street, a few blocks north of the Times Square theatre district. Opened in 1972 and renamed in 1983 to honor composer George Gershwin and his lyricist brother Ira, it’s Broadway’s largest theatre by seat count — roughly 1,900 seats across the Orchestra and Mezzanine — and has been Wicked’s home since 2003.
Getting there: Take the 1, C, or E train to 50th Street, or the N, R, or Q to 49th Street. Both stops are a short walk from the theatre entrance.
