Foo Fighters and the Take Cover Tour

Foo Fighters were formed by Dave Grohl in 1994 and are Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees. Songs like “Everlong”, “The Pretender”, “Best of You”, “Learn to Fly” and “Times Like These” have made them one of the biggest live rock acts in the world. The Take Cover Tour is the band’s 15th visit to Australia, with licensed all-ages stadium shows across Australia and New Zealand, and Newcastle is one of the regional stops on the run.

After Newcastle the tour plays Melbourne on 14 November and Adelaide on 17 November. It returns in January 2027 with Christchurch on 19 January, Auckland on 22 January and Perth on 25 January.

Tickets

Tickets for the Australian shows went on sale in late February, and AXS is the exclusive ticketing agent for the Newcastle show. If the face-value seats you want have gone, resale marketplaces such as Hello Tickets and Ticombo list tickets for the Newcastle date. Resale prices are set by sellers and can sit above or below face value, so compare sections and fees before you buy.

Tip: McDonald Jones Stadium is a smaller venue than the stadiums in Sydney and Melbourne, so decide on your budget and preferred area early. Prices for standing and lower-tier seats move fastest as the show gets closer.

The venue: McDonald Jones Stadium

McDonald Jones Stadium is at 294 Turton Road in Broadmeadow, a few kilometres from Newcastle’s city centre. It is the home of the Newcastle Knights and Newcastle Jets and is an outdoor stadium with a capacity of around 30,000. Austadiums lists capacity as temporarily reduced to about 27,500 for the 2026 season because of maintenance on part of the western grandstand, and concert capacity can differ again.

The tour is listed as licensed all ages, but check the stadium’s event page for age and standing-area guidelines, bag rules and entry times before the show. Gates and set times had not been confirmed at the time of writing, so allow extra time to get there on a Thursday evening.

Where to sit

For this show the floor is sold as General Admission standing, split into GA Front and GA Rear, with reserved seating in the grandstands. The stage sits at one end of the field with a narrow runway reaching out into GA Front, and there are standing hills on the grass banks either side of the field. The map below shows how the stadium fits together.

Illustrated seating guide for Foo Fighters at McDonald Jones Stadium, Newcastle, showing the stage and runway, GA Front and GA Rear standing, the two standing hills and the Eastern and Western grandstands
  • GA Front: standing, closest to the stage and runway.
  • GA Rear: standing, set back behind GA Front.
  • Northern and Southern Hills: standing areas on the grass banks either side of the field.
  • Eastern Grandstand: seated sections along one side of the stadium, in an inner and an outer tier.
  • Western Grandstand: seated sections along the opposite side, in an inner and an outer tier.

If you are choosing between standing and seated, think about how you like to watch a show. Standing puts you closer but on your feet for the whole night, while a grandstand seat gives you a raised, more comfortable view of the stage.

Getting there and getting around

Flights

Newcastle Airport at Williamtown serves the city directly, and many visitors also fly into Sydney Airport and continue north by train or road. Most international visitors need an Australian visa or electronic travel authority before flying, so confirm entry requirements on the official government site.

To the stadium

  • Train: Broadmeadow is the closest railway station to the stadium, on the Central Coast and Newcastle Line, with Hunter Line services also running through the region. Check the Transport for NSW app for timetables and any extra services for this show.
  • Bus: for big events at the stadium, Transport for NSW has run shuttle buses from Newcastle CBD and suburbs including Charlestown, Wallsend and Mayfield. Check whether shuttles are scheduled for this show.
  • Light rail: the Newcastle Light Rail runs through the city centre, so it is useful for getting between your hotel, the harbour and the train or bus connection.
  • Driving: parking around big events fills up and nearby streets can have restrictions, so check the stadium’s official information and plan to arrive early.
  • Taxi and rideshare: expect queues and road closures straight after the show. Agree a pick-up point a short walk from the stadium to avoid the worst of the crush.

Plan your journey home before the show, and check the Transport for NSW trip planner for the latest services.

Where to stay

The most convenient bases are Broadmeadow and nearby suburbs for the stadium, or the Newcastle city centre, with a wider choice of hotels, restaurants and bars, plus the beaches and harbour on your doorstep. Concert nights push prices up, so book early and choose a flexible rate if you can.

Suggested hotel: QT Newcastle

QT Newcastle is at 185 Hunter Street in East Newcastle, in a heritage-listed former department store building. It has an Italian restaurant, a lobby cafe and bar and a rooftop bar, and it is a walk from Newcastle Beach, with Nobbys Beach about 15 minutes on foot. It does not have a pool or gym, so it suits a short stay where the location and design are the draw.

Practical tips for fans

  • Arrive early. Entry queues take longer on a big stadium night, and a Thursday show means many people will be coming straight from work.
  • Check McDonald Jones Stadium’s bag policy, age guidelines and entry details before you leave your hotel, and look for confirmed gates and set times closer to the date.
  • Plan your ride home in advance, and check the Transport for NSW app for event services and disruptions.
  • November is late spring in New South Wales, and the stadium is open-air, so pack sun protection and a light layer for the evening.
  • If you are standing, think about comfortable shoes and ear protection, as stadium rock shows are loud.
  • Only buy tickets from sellers you trust, and compare resale prices against face value.
