Why see OM at the Vélodrome

The Stade Vélodrome is one of the largest club stadiums in France, with room for about 67,000 and a roof that traps the noise. It was rebuilt for Euro 2016 and sits in the 8th arrondissement, a short ride south of the Vieux-Port, and the supporters in the two curved Virage stands behind the goals sing, wave flags and light flares through much of the match.

Olympique de Marseille were founded in 1899 and have won nine Ligue 1 titles. In 1993 they became the only French club to win the Champions League, and the club’s motto, Droit au But, appears on the shirt. Match nights here are known across Europe as some of the loudest in the game.

This season’s home calendar has plenty to plan a trip around. Lyon visit on Sunday, March 21 for the Olympico, Nice come on Saturday, December 5, Lille on Saturday, January 16, Monaco on Saturday, March 13 and Lens on Sunday, May 16. Levski Sofia, Celta de Vigo and Anderlecht bring Europa League nights to the city.

Marseille tickets

Many Stade Vélodrome seats go to club members before any tickets reach general sale, and the biggest games sell out quickly. That makes ticket platforms the practical route for visitors, so compare prices for your date before you buy.

Where to sit

The Stade Vélodrome has four stands. Tribune Ganay and Tribune Jean Bouin run along the long sides of the pitch, with lower and upper levels. The Virage Nord, named after Patrice de Peretti, and the Virage Sud, named after Chevalier Roze, sit behind the goals, and the loudest support gathers in those end stands.

Longside seats give the best view of the whole pitch and are the most expensive. The Virage stands cost less and put you in the middle of the atmosphere, though you will be on your feet and singing. Away fans are placed in a separate section, so check which stand your ticket is for before you buy.

Getting there

Metro Line 2 serves the stadium. Get off at Rond-Point du Prado for the Jean Bouin and Virage Nord stands, or at Sainte-Marguerite Dromel for the Ganay and Virage Sud stands. Tram Line 3 also stops at Sainte-Marguerite Dromel, and buses 19 and 83 run to Rond-Point du Prado. Metro service runs more often from two hours before an event and is extended afterwards.

One RTM ticket covers bus, metro and tram for up to an hour. Driving is not recommended, as stadium car parks are often closed or reserved on match days and nearby streets can be blocked. If you do drive, use a park-and-ride site and travel in by metro or tram. From Marseille Provence Airport, take the A1 bus to Gare Saint-Charles and change to Metro Line 2.

Where to stay

Staying near the Vieux-Port puts restaurants, the harbour and the main sights within walking distance, and the metro links the centre to the stadium. The Castellane and Prado area is closer to the ground and has a direct Line 2 route on match days. Book early for the Olympico and Europa League nights, as hotels fill up.

Suggested hotel: Hôtel C2

Hôtel C2 is a five-star boutique hotel at 48 rue Roux de Brignoles, between the Vieux-Port and Notre-Dame de la Garde. Estrangin-Préfecture metro station, on Line 1, is about 400 metres away, and you change at Castellane for Line 2 to the stadium. The hotel has a small spa with a heated pool, hammam and jacuzzi, and a lounge bar opening onto a patio garden.

Practical tips for fans

  • Book the Olympico and Europa League nights as soon as you know your dates, as they only get more expensive.
  • Check kick-off times close to your trip, as rows marked TBC are confirmed by the league a few weeks before each round.
  • Pick your metro stop by stand: Rond-Point du Prado for Jean Bouin and Virage Nord, Sainte-Marguerite Dromel for Ganay and Virage Sud.
  • Take the metro or tram rather than a car, and arrive early to get through the gates.
  • Saturday and Sunday games leave more of the weekend free for sightseeing, while midweek European nights suit a short two-night stay.
