Why see OL at Groupama Stadium

Groupama Stadium opened in January 2016 on the eastern edge of the Lyon area, and holds about 59,000. It is a modern, all-seated ground built for football, with the stands close to the pitch, and the supporters behind the goals sing and wave flags through much of the match.

Olympique Lyonnais were founded in 1950 and won seven Ligue 1 titles in a row between 2002 and 2008, a run that remains the longest in French football. Lyon is also one of France’s great food cities, so a match weekend here pairs well with a long dinner in the Old Town.

This season’s home calendar has plenty to plan a trip around. Marseille visit on Sunday, December 13 for the Olympico, Monaco come on Sunday, November 29, Lille on Sunday, January 31, Lens on Saturday, February 13 and Paris Saint-Germain on Sunday, May 9. Lillestrøm, Royale Union Saint-Gilloise and Leverkusen bring Europa League nights to the city.

Lyon tickets

Many Groupama Stadium seats go to club members before any tickets reach general sale, and the biggest games sell out quickly. That makes resale marketplaces the practical route for visitors, so compare prices for your date before you buy.

Where to sit

Groupama Stadium is an all-seater with lower and upper levels on every side. The long-side stands give the best view of the whole pitch and are the most expensive, while the end stands behind the goals cost less and put you closer to the singing and flags.

Away fans are placed in a separate section, so check which stand your ticket is for before you buy. Seats in the upper levels give a view of the whole pitch and cost less than the best lower-level seats.

Getting there

The stadium is in Décines-Charpieu, east of central Lyon. Tram T3 runs from Part-Dieu to the Décines Grand Large stop, which is about a 15-minute walk from the stadium. The Rhônexpress, which links Lyon and Saint-Exupéry airport, also serves the stadium.

Tram works have disrupted match-day services in the past, with replacement buses running to the stadium, so check the TCL network for changes before you travel. Arrive early to get through the gates, and allow extra time after the final whistle, as the trams are busy.

Where to stay

Central Lyon is the best base for a match weekend, with the Old Town, the Rhône and the Saône all within reach and a tram route to the stadium. Book early for the Olympico and Europa League nights, as hotels fill up.

Suggested hotel: InterContinental Lyon – Hôtel-Dieu

The InterContinental Lyon – Hôtel-Dieu is a five-star hotel at 20 quai Jules Courmont, on the banks of the Rhône. Bellecour metro station, on lines A and D, is the nearest. The hotel has a restaurant with a garden terrace, a bar under the Grand Dôme and a spa.

Practical tips for fans

  • Book the Olympico and Europa League nights as soon as you know your dates, as they only get more expensive.
  • Check kick-off times close to your trip, as rows marked TBC are confirmed by the league a few weeks before each round.
  • Check the TCL network for tram changes before a match, as works can disrupt services to the stadium.
  • Arrive early to get through the gates, and allow extra time for the trams after the final whistle.
  • Saturday and Sunday games leave more of the weekend free for sightseeing, while midweek European nights suit a short two-night stay.
