Why see AS Monaco at the Stade Louis II

The Stade Louis II is one of the most unusual grounds in European football. It opened in 1985 in Fontvieille, an area of land reclaimed from the sea, and holds about 18,500, so the stands are close to the pitch.

AS Monaco were founded in 1924 and have won eight Ligue 1 titles, most recently in 2017. The club has produced and sold some of the best young players in Europe, and a visit combines football with one of the most glamorous settings on the Riviera.

This season’s home calendar has several fixtures to plan a trip around. Nice visit for the Côte d’Azur derby on Saturday, January 2, Paris Saint-Germain on Saturday, January 30, Olympique Lyonnais on Saturday, March 6 and Rennes on Saturday, April 10. Nordsjaelland and Lincoln Red Imps bring Conference League football to the principality.

Monaco tickets

Club members and season-ticket holders take a large share of Stade Louis II seats, and the biggest games sell out quickly. That makes resale marketplaces the practical route for visitors, so compare prices for your date before you buy.

Where to sit

The Stade Louis II is a compact all-seater, so even the cheaper seats are close to the action. The central seats along the sides give the best view of the whole pitch and cost the most, while seats behind the goals cost less.

Away fans are placed in a separate section, so check which stand your ticket is for before you buy.

Getting there

The stadium is in Fontvieille, on the western side of Monaco below the Rock. If you arrive by train, Monaco-Monte-Carlo station is the stop for the principality, and from there it is a walk or a short ride on the local buses. Visitors staying in Fontvieille can walk to the stadium.

If you stay in Nice, trains to Monaco take about 25 minutes. Allow extra time after the final whistle, as the late trains back along the coast fill up.

Where to stay

Monaco is one of the most expensive places to stay in Europe, and match weekends push prices higher. Staying in Fontvieille puts you within walking distance of the stadium, while Nice, Beausoleil and Cap d’Ail are cheaper and a short train or bus ride away. Book early for the derby and Paris Saint-Germain.
